Why is my W203 C-Class knocking or clunking from the front?

W203W209 (C209)

Short answer

A W203 C-Class that knocks from the front over bumps, or shudders through the steering when braking, usually has worn control-arm or tension-strut bushes and ball joints. Worn stabiliser links, tie rod ends, rack ends and shock absorbers are the next suspects. The W203 shares many of these parts with the CLK W209, and we stock a full front kit.

Checked by the M&B Parts team, 5 October 2026.

Symptoms

  • A knock or clunk over speed humps and potholes.
  • A shudder through the steering wheel when braking from highway speed (often worn arm bushes rather than the brakes).
  • A rattle over small bumps (often the stabiliser links).
  • Loose or wandering steering, or a clunk when turning at low speed.
  • Uneven wear on the inner or outer edge of the front tyres.

Likely causes

1. Lower control arm and tension strut, with their bushes and ball joints. Each front corner has a lower control arm with a ball joint and a separate tension strut (often sold as the "upper control arm"). The bushes are a known W203 wear point and cause the knock and the brake shudder. A workshop checks the bushes and ball joint for play and cracks with the wheel off the ground.

2. Stabiliser links. Worn links rattle over small bumps. A workshop checks the joints for play and torn boots.

3. Tie rod ends and rack ends. Play in the outer tie rod ends or the inner rack ends gives loose steering and tyre wear. A wheel alignment is needed after replacement.

4. Front shock absorbers and top mounts. Worn or leaking shocks give bounce and knocks; a worn top mount knocks on full lock. Shocks are replaced in pairs.

Safety first

  • Have a qualified workshop diagnose the fault before you buy parts. Several faults look alike, and a list of symptoms is not a diagnosis.
  • This page is information only. Have safety-related parts fitted by a qualified workshop.
  • Steering and suspension parts are safety-critical. Have a qualified workshop inspect and diagnose the car before buying parts.
  • Get a wheel alignment after replacing control arms, tension struts, tie rod ends or rack ends.
  • A badly worn ball joint can separate. If the steering suddenly feels loose or the car pulls hard, stop driving and have it checked.

Questions

What's the price of a W203 front suspension kit?
The live prices are on the cards above. Our 10-piece control arm kit for the C-Class W203 and CLK W209 covers both sides; single lower arms, tension struts, stabiliser links, rack ends and tie rod ends are listed separately.
My W203 shakes when I brake from high speed. Is it the brakes?
It can be warped discs, but on the W203 worn front arm bushes are a known cause of a shudder under braking. Have a workshop check both before buying parts.
Do I need a wheel alignment after replacing control arms?
Yes. After replacing arms, tension struts, tie rod ends or rack ends, have the alignment set, or the tyres will wear quickly.
Do W203 and CLK W209 parts match?
Many front parts are shared, including the lower arms and tension struts we stock. Send us your VIN and we'll confirm.
Are these Mercedes-Benz factory parts?
No. They are new aftermarket parts, OEM-quality, with the 6-month CPA warranty against defects. For fitted parts we need the RMI- or MIWA-accredited workshop's invoice. See our returns policy.
