Why is my W205 C-Class knocking from the front or riding bouncy?

W205C238

Short answer

A W205 C-Class that knocks or creaks from the front over bumps usually has worn control-arm bushes or ball joints, or worn stabiliser links; a floaty, bouncy ride points to tired front shock absorbers. The W205 has a four-link front axle, so there are more arms to check than on the older C-Class; a workshop finds which one has play.

Checked by the M&B Parts team, 5 October 2026.

Symptoms

  • A clunk or knock over speed humps and potholes at low speed.
  • A creak or squeak from the front suspension, sometimes worse in cold or dry weather.
  • A floaty or bouncy ride, nose-dive under braking, or oil on a shock body.
  • Wandering, vague steering or uneven front tyre wear.

Likely causes

1. Lower control arms. The W205 front axle has two separate lower links on each side (a tension strut and a spring control arm) and an upper wishbone. The lower arms carry the most load, and worn bushes or ball joints cause the knock. A workshop checks each arm for play with a pry bar.

2. Stabiliser links. Their sealed ball joints wear once the boot tears and dirt gets in. Worn links rattle and knock over small bumps.

3. Upper wishbone. A worn ball joint or bush in the upper arm also knocks and can creak.

4. Front shock absorbers and top mounts. Worn shocks make the car float and bounce; leaking shocks show oil on the body. Replace them in pairs on the same axle.

On cars with AIRMATIC air suspension, the front air struts are different parts; the shock absorbers on this page are conventional shocks for cars without air suspension. Send us your VIN if unsure.

Safety first

  • Have a qualified workshop diagnose the fault before you buy parts. Several faults look alike, and a list of symptoms is not a diagnosis.
  • This page is information only. Have safety-related parts fitted by a qualified workshop.
  • Steering and suspension parts are safety-critical. Have a qualified workshop inspect and diagnose the car before buying parts.
  • Get a wheel alignment after replacing control arms or tie rod ends.
  • A badly worn ball joint can separate. If the steering suddenly feels loose or the car pulls hard, stop driving and have it checked.

Questions

What's the price of a W205 front suspension kit?
The live prices are on the cards above. Our 12-piece control arm kit for the C-Class W205 and E-Coupe C238 covers both sides; single lower and upper arms, stabiliser links and front shocks are listed separately.
My W205 creaks over bumps. Is something broken?
Creaks are usually a dry or worn bush or ball joint, and some W205s do it more in cold or dry weather. It isn't urgent if there is no knock or play, but have a workshop check the arms and links at your next service.
Can I replace just one front shock?
Shocks should be replaced in pairs on the same axle, so the car stays balanced when braking and cornering.
Do these parts fit a W205 with AIRMATIC?
AIRMATIC cars use air struts instead of the conventional front shocks on this page, and some arms may differ. Send us your VIN and we'll check.
Are these Mercedes-Benz factory parts?
No. They are new aftermarket parts, OEM-quality, with the 6-month CPA warranty against defects. For fitted parts we need the RMI- or MIWA-accredited workshop's invoice. See our returns policy.
